Will & Inventory of Thomas Porritt of Whitby, Yorks, Master Mariner.

Dated 19.3.1783, proved 7.11.1787 at York.


In the name of God Amen I Thomas Porritt of Whitby in the County of York Master & Mariner being of sound and disposing Mind Memory and understanding praised be almighty God for the same Do make and order this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say 

I give and bequeath unto my dear and well beloved Wife Mary all and singular my Household Furniture and Implements of Household Plate (except as herein after mentioned) China and Linnen to and for her own sole use and benefit And I also give and bequeath to her my said Wife Mary the sum of Fifty pounds to be paid to her within one Month after my death 

I give and bequeath unto Richmond Porritt my Son my Silver tankard at his age of nineteen years and my Will and Mind is and I do hereby declare the same to be that my Ship called the Changeable shall not be sent to Sea after my Death by my Executors but shall be sold by them for the best price or prices that can be got for the same as soon as conveniently may be after my death and the money arising therefrom put and placed out at interest on good security and whereas I have in the hands of Mr Christopher Harrison the sum of Five Hundred pounds which sum I also desire my Executors to take the care and management of and to pay thereout such expences and debts as may be owing on account of my said Ship called the Changeable the above mentioned legacy of Fifty pounds to my said Wife and also all other my just Debts and my Funeral expences and after such payments and deductions as aforesaid the remainder thereof together with the sum or sums of money raised by the sale of my said Ship the Changeable I do hereby direct shall be put and placed out at Interest on good security by my Executors herein after named and the interest arising therefrom shall from time to time as the same shall be received by my said Executors be paid and applied in manner following that is to say 

One full half part of all the Interest Money arising from all the principal Money hereby directed to be placed out to be paid to my said Wife Mary yearly for and during the time she shall continue my Widow but in case she change her condition by a second marriage then I give order and direct that no more than the sum of Twenty pounds per annum of the said interest Money shall be paid to her during the term of her natural life and the remaining half part or in case of the marriage of my said Wife then all the said Interest Money except the annual payment of Twenty pounds to my said Wife for her Life shall be paid and applied by may said executors to and for the use and benefit of my said Son Richmond untill he attain the age of Nineteen years at which age I do hereby order Will and direct that he shall act for himself and receive one whole half of all the principal Money so placed out as aforesaid if he shall think fit and in every other manner Act in and about his own business and that his receipt shall as far as I can or may legally direct be as good a discharge to my said Executors for any Sum or Sums of Money paid by them to him as if my said Son had actually attained the age of twenty one years 

And it is my Will and mind that in Case my said Son Richmond shall live with his Mother untill he shall attain the age of Nineteen years that then and in such Case she shall be allowed and paid by my said executors the yearly sum of Twenty pounds over and above what is herein before directed to be yearly paid to her for his maintenance and education 

And as to all the rest residue and remainder of my Personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath unto my said Son Richmond Porritt at his said age of Nineteen years And my Will and Mind further is that in case of the death of my said Son Richmond before he attain his said age of Nineteen years then and after such event the following legacies shall be paid by my said Executors out of the said principal Money that is to say to my Niece Ann Mead Daughter of Francis Mead the sum of ten pounds To my Nephew John Porritt Son of my Brother George Porritt the Sum of Twenty pounds and to Grace Burbanks Daughter of Robert Burbanks ten pounds of lawfull Money of Great Britain But in case of the death of both my said Wife and Son Richmond before he attains the age of Nineteen years then and in such case only I give and bequeath all the said principal Monies and all the arrears of interest due thereon at such time unto and amongst all my first cousins by my Father and Mother's side equally share and share alike 

And Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my brother George Porritt and Robert Burbanks the executors in trust of this my last will untill my said Son Richmond shall attain his said age of Nineteen years And I do hereby direct that my Executors shall pay or reemburse them selves all such Costs Charges and expences as they shall be necessarily put unto in the execution of the trust hereby in them reposed and that they shall not be accountable for any loss that may happen not through their wilful neglect of default And I do constitute and appoint my Son Richmond on his attaining his age of Nineteen years whole and sole executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other Wills by me heretofore made In Witness whereof I the said Thomas Porritt have to this my last Will and Testament the same being contained in two sheets of paper set my hand and seal the Nineteenth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and Eighty three
