Yesterday sailed from Stormness, the ship Marlborough, of Whitby, Captain Preswick, for Savannah, La Marr, in Georgia, with about 80 emigrants on board, 25 of whom embarked at Whitby, and the remaining 55 are all from Orkney. This is the first ship that has purposely stopped here for emigrants since emigration begun to be frequent in Britain. Though this colony is not only looked upon to be the most favourable climate, yet the spirit of emigration prevails so much among us at present, that Mr Jonas Brown, the owner of the ship, would have got three times the number, had he occasion for them. This prevailing spirit surely merits the attention of the legislature.

On wednesday last, Mr Christopher Preswick of Whitby, a Gentleman whose excellent qualities eminently endeared him to a numerous circle of friends and acquaintance. He lost his life in the humane attempt to rescue from drowning a person whom he observed borne away by a current formed by the outset of the tide round a bank, into which he had been inadvertently drawn in the exercise of bathing. In the effort used by both parties on this occasion, Mr P. was borne off his feet into the current, and both unfortunately perished before assistance could reach them. The name of the other unfortunate sufferer was Paul Stott, of Kirby, late of Whitby, brazier. -- The loss of an individual of the humane and enterprising spirit of Mr Preswick, will be severely felt and deeply regretted at Whitby, the place of his nativity and residence.
